Lowell Liebermann
Internationally acclaimed as one of America’s most performed and recorded living composers, Lowell Liebermann has created a rich and influential body of work that bridges lyric beauty with contemporary expression. His music, celebrated for its emotional depth and masterful craftsmanship, has been performed by many of the world’s leading orchestras, soloists, and chamber ensembles.
Among his vast catalogue, Liebermann’s contributions to the flute repertoire hold a special place of distinction. Works such as the Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 23, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39, and Eight Pieces for Solo Flute, Op. 59 have become modern classics — beloved by performers and audiences alike for their brilliance, intensity, and profound musicality.
His works have been championed by artists including Sir James Galway, Jeanne Baxtresser, Alexa Still, Carol Wincenc, and Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, and continue to appear frequently on concert stages, recordings, and competitions worldwide. Most recently, in 2024, Liebermann’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra No. 2, Op. 142 received its world premiere by Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, further extending his legacy as one of the most significant living composers for the flute.
A graduate of the Juilliard School, where he studied with David Diamond and Vincent Persichetti, Liebermann has earned widespread recognition through numerous awards, residencies, and commissions. His music has been featured by leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and London Symphony Orchestra, and recorded on major international labels.
