Meet the 2025 Honorees
Lifetime Achievement Award 2025 – Ludwig Böhm (Germany)
Awarded for 2025; announced January 2026
Award Citation
The Lifetime Achievement Award of the Global Flute Excellence Awards is presented to Ludwig Böhm in recognition of a lifetime of exceptional dedication to the preservation, study, and transmission of the legacy of Theobald Böhm, inventor of the modern flute.
For more than four decades, Ludwig Böhm has served as the world’s foremost custodian of Theobald Böhm’s historical, technical, and artistic heritage. His work has profoundly shaped how flutists, educators, scholars, and instrument makers across continents understand the origins of the modern flute, ensuring that its foundations are studied with accuracy and passed on with intellectual and cultural integrity.
Preservation, Research, and Institutional Legacy
To secure this work for future generations, Ludwig Böhm founded the Theobald Böhm Archive, the Theobald Böhm Society, and the Theobald Böhm Foundation, establishing enduring institutional structures that support research, publications, lectures, and historically informed performance worldwide.
Through these institutions, Böhm’s legacy has been transformed from a historical narrative into a living body of knowledge — accessible, verifiable, and actively engaged with by the international flute community.
Global Impact and Continuing Mission
In 2025, Ludwig Böhm’s lifelong mission took particularly visible and international form through the 6th International Theobald Böhm Competition for Flute and Alto Flute, held in Munich. Bringing together young flutists from numerous countries, the competition united historical awareness with the future of flute performance and education, affirming the relevance of Böhm’s principles in contemporary artistic practice.
Plans are already confirmed for the 7th edition of the competition in 2028, underscoring that this work is ongoing rather than retrospective.
Alongside these initiatives, Ludwig Böhm continues to share his research globally through lectures and educational outreach across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond, engaging students, educators, and performers directly with the historical roots of their instrument.
The Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals whose sustained commitment has fundamentally shaped the cultural, intellectual, and artistic foundations of the flute world.
In recognizing Ludwig Böhm, the Global Flute Excellence Awards affirm the profound global importance of historical preservation, scholarly rigor, and institutional continuity as essential pillars of the flute’s past, present, and future.
This recognition is part of the Global Flute Excellence Awards 2025.
