Performer Of The Year 2025 – Paolo Taballione (Italy)

Awarded for 2025; announced January 2026

Award Citation

The Performer of the Year 2025 award of the Global Flute Excellence Awards is presented to Paolo Taballione (Italy) in recognition of a year defined by artistic coherence, interpretive authority, and an expanded vision of flute performance on the international stage.

Rather than being shaped by a single appearance, Taballione’s 2025 emerged as a sustained artistic journey — marked by performances unified by intention, narrative clarity, and a distinctive musical identity. Across diverse contexts, his work demonstrated commanding virtuosity guided by musical intelligence, with technical mastery consistently placed in service of expressive meaning.

Artistic Vision and Performance Leadership

A central artistic statement of the year was Taballione’s realization of Franz Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie for flute and chamber orchestra with L’Appassionata. Originally conceived for violin, the work’s operatic scale and extreme demands pose significant interpretive challenges. Taballione’s interpretation did not seek instrumental imitation; instead, it redefined the work through breath, color, and phrasing, reclaiming its dramatic substance for the flute.

Leadership within the ensemble emerged through sound rather than gesture. Timing, articulation, and long-span phrasing shaped a continuous musical narrative in which virtuosity remained present but never self-serving. The flute functioned as a dramatic voice — sustaining tension, character, and intensity with clarity and authority.

This project further distinguished itself through an integrated visual conception. Conceived cinematographically, the performance treated camera movement and framing as extensions of musical interpretation, granting the flute a confident and contemporary visual presence rarely afforded to the instrument.

Virtuosity, Visibility, and International Reach

Another defining moment of 2025 occurred at Teatro Palladium in Rome, where Taballione’s encore performance of Flight of the Bumblebee—executed at an extreme tempo in a single, uninterrupted breath using circular breathing—attracted wide international attention. The performance resonated not as spectacle alone, but as an example of precision, rhythmic stability, and calm authority under exceptional physical demand.

In May 2025, Taballione appeared as solo flutist with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Europakonzert, conducted by Riccardo Muti and broadcast worldwide to audiences in more than 80 countries. This appearance placed the flute at the center of one of the most visible international cultural platforms of the year.

Pedagogical Influence

Alongside his performance activity, Taballione remained deeply engaged in education, leading an Advanced Flute Course at the MusicaRiva Festival. His pedagogical work reflected the same clarity, discipline, and musical honesty that define his performances, reinforcing the essential link between performance excellence and the transmission of artistic values.
